Baptisms
Baptism is a symbolic action that signifies the blessings and life God gives us when we are welcomed into the community of faithful. Baptism uses water as a symbolic ritual to mark one's becoming a part of the universal church family. The sacrament of baptism is the single rite of initiation into any Christian community, and is universally recognized across denominations.
At Hope Springs we offer baptism to all ages. We believe the gift of God's love doesn't depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood. With children, instruction is given to parents or sponsors to equip them for the child's Christian nurture. During the ceremony, which usually takes place as part of a regular worship service, everyone in the congregation pledges support for the child and their parents.

Frequently asked questions
-
We baptize people of all ages. Baptism is not a celebration of our faith or accomplishments, but of God’s grace and faithfulness to us. That’s good news for all of us, no matter what stage of life we are in.
-
No. However, the promises you will make as a parent include being part of a church community. Normally, at least one of the parents is a member of our congregation. Alternatively, a member can sponsor your child.

-
The minister will set a date for the baptism with you. Baptisms normally happen during our normal Sunday morning worship service.
-
For us, the role of “Godparents” has traditionally been filled by the whole congregation. However, some may choose to call upon the support of special family members and friends. The minister will talk with you about how they can be included in the ceremony.
-
Yes! Some parents want to give thanks for the gift of their child without committing to be part of the congregation. For them, a Service of Thanksgiving and Blessing is a wonderful way to express this. Other parents prefer to leave the choice of baptism to their child when they get older. A Dedication Ceremony is a good option for them.

Baptism does not need to be repeated, since it is a celebration of God’s faithfulness which remains constant throughout our lives. Still, throughout our lives we may want to take an opportunity to celebrate and renew our baptisms. We can do that through Confirmation or a Profession of Faith.
We celebrate the welcoming of new members into our community through a Profession of Faith, Confirmation or a Transfer of Membership during Sunday worship a couple of times each year. Please reach out to Rev. Jen if you would like to explore this avenue of belonging to find out the next steps.
